Ban the speechwriter
I was reading a profile of Obama speechwriter Jon Favreau by stenographer Ashley Parker in an essay titled What Would Obama Say? During the interview, Ashley may have unwittingly captured a profound utterance. The following quote was attributed to Jon Favreau, "The trick of the speechwriting, if you will, is making the client say your brilliant words while somehow managing to make it sound as though they issued straight from their own soul" (Glenn, C., 2nd edition, pg.131). How many times have the American public been treated to the oratory salve of a leader staring squarely into a camera reading from a teleprompter and believed the words emanating from our visual media? The disconnect is the guttural hope that the speaker may actually believe what is being spoken. Sadly, they're marionettes putting on a performance.
